Fire watch in New York City.
Fire watch is a temporary safety assignment when a required fire-protection system is out, or when hot work can start a fire. It is not a regular security shift with a different name. Tristate Security Patrol staffs fire watch posts and keeps the log the inspector expects to see.
Call 347-991-0121 and say whether the system is impaired or someone is using a torch. Those are different FDNY certificates. The company is at 5314 16th Avenue, Suite 238, Brooklyn, NY 11204. If the building is in Nassau County, use the Long Island fire watch page instead of this one.
For most standard posts, uniformed officers are scheduled within 24–48 hours. Emergency coverage is coordinated through 24/7 dispatch.
Impairment watches and hot-work standby.
The existing service description says certified fire watch officers deploy with compliance-ready logs, around-the-clock coverage, and hot-work standby. The certificates behind that sentence are FDNY’s. F-01 is the citywide fire guard for impairment. F-60 is the fire guard for torch operations at construction sites, rooftops and torch-applied roofing, and citywide-permit torch work.
A guard on an impairment watch patrols the area where the system is out and is supposed to have a way to raise the alarm. A guard on a torch watches the sparks, including floors below when the code requires it. Neither person should be pulled off to watch a loading dock unless the post orders and the fire code both allow it. On a Nassau order, the county sheet says fire watch is their only duty.

Sprinkler, standpipe, or alarm impairment
Hourly patrol of the affected area after the initial window the code allows a trained building person to cover.
Hot-work standby
A fire guard present during torch work and for at least 30 minutes after it stops.
Logs
Rounds and conditions written so an inspector can read them.
Scheduling
Most standard posts are put on the schedule within 24–48 hours. An impaired system that cannot wait goes through 24/7 dispatch.
Brooklyn buildings and other NYC boroughs share the code.
A Brooklyn brownstone with a sprinkler shut for a repair and a high-rise in the Bronx with an alarm panel out of service are the same legal problem at different scales. The 50,000-square-foot limit decides how many guards you need. A small building may be one guard. A floor plate over that size needs more than one, because each guard’s patrol area is capped.
Construction fire watch in Brooklyn is its own page because the site also needs gate security. This service page is the fire code assignment. Queens, NY buildings use the same FDNY rules. Long Island buildings under a Nassau order do not.
The four-hour rule and the hourly round.
FDNY’s F-01 page and NYC Fire Code section 901.7.2.2 say that when a required system is out of service, a fire watch is maintained by certificate holders. For the first four hours of a planned or unplanned outage, if the affected area does not exceed 50,000 square feet, the impairment coordinator or a trained person the owner designates may conduct the watch. After four hours, patrols are by F-01 fire guards. Each affected floor or area is patrolled at least once an hour, and one guard does not cover more than 50,000 square feet.
For hot work, Fire Code Chapter 26 requires the fire watch during the operation and for a minimum of 30 minutes after the work ends. The authority can extend that. F-60 fire guards are required for torch operations at construction sites, on any rooftop or torch-applied roofing operation, and in a building when the torch operator holds a citywide permit. A single guard may cover more than one torch on the same floor only within the 50-foot and line-of-sight limits in that chapter. Floors below can need their own guard when sparks can travel, generally within 35 feet, with the exceptions the chapter lists.
This is a plain-language reading of those public documents, not a determination for your building. The fire alarm company, the impairment coordinator, and FDNY still have roles. Hot work in an area with an impaired sprinkler is restricted. Read the F-01 study material before you assume welding can continue.

Licensed officers, documented work.
Officers assigned to a New York City fire watch post are expected to hold the FDNY certificate that post requires. Security guard registration with the Department of State is a separate credential and does not replace F-01 or F-60.
Founded in 2021. The Brooklyn address is the business address. Fire watch logs are the record for the impairment or the hot work, kept for the inspector.
What is published, and what is quoted.
Fire watch is quoted from the square footage, the number of floors, and how long the system will be out or the torch will run. It is not the $159 or $399 patrol membership. Those memberships do not staff an impairment.
Answers, in plain language.
What is a fire guard in NYC?
In this context it is a person with the FDNY certificate for the job: F-01 for an impaired fire-protection system, or F-60 for specified torch operations. A security guard card alone is not that certificate.
How often does a fire watch patrol?
For an impaired system, FDNY materials say each affected area is patrolled at least hourly, and one guard’s area stays within 50,000 square feet.
Can our staff do the first few hours?
For the first four hours, if the area is 50,000 square feet or less, the code allows the impairment coordinator or a trained person the owner designates. After that, F-01 fire guards take the patrol.
How long is the watch after hot work?
Chapter 26 says at least 30 minutes after the work ends, longer if the hazards require it.
Do you cover fire watch in Brooklyn and the rest of the city?
Yes for New York City, including the Brooklyn fire watch page. Nassau County orders follow the county sheet, not this FDNY page.
